Some want it because they work at night, or in low-light. Some need it for accessibility purposes: visual impairments, migraines or other visual disorders. Some people want it just because they want it. That’s fair too! Whyever you want dark mode, if you want dark mode on Slack, you now, finally, we are happy to say, have it.

Dark mode is now available on the app across all platforms.
On Slack. It would be odd for us to announce this otherwise. Specifically, today sees the release of dark mode across all desktop apps, Mac, Windows and Linux. You’ll need to be on version 4.0.3 for Mac, or 4.0.2 for Windows and Linux. If it’s not showing up, try refreshing, once. Or twice. Three might well be the magic number. It is there, we promise.
Dark mode on mobile is available already (in your settings menu), but it’s worth pointing out that dark mode is device-specific: We don’t want to assume that just because you want dark mode on desktop, you’ll also want it on your phone … but you’re now free to set it on both. You can enlighten yourself more on the details of that in our Help Center.
Head to Themes within your Preferences to toggle between light and dark. To get there, click on your name in the left sidebar > Preferences > Themes. You’ll get a preview of how everything will look—including our default set of sidebar themes, which will remain familiar but shift in palette to work better with dark mode.
There are also new themes that have been added specifically for dark mode. These will persist in whatever workspace you set them to across mobile and desktop, so whenever you switch to the dark side, your sidebar won’t leap out and surprise you.
Slack has recently started testing a dark mode for their iOS and Android apps, however, they have not announced any plans to introduce dark mode in their desktop apps yet. The company announced last year that they are working on new native apps for macOS and Windows so dark mode might be introduced as part of those major updates. Fortunately, if you are on macOS, there is an alternative lightweight Slack app called Sblack that has a dark mode and is more performance efficient than the official Slack app.

Sblack has been developed by the same folks who have created Boxy, a macOS app for Gmail and Google Calendar. The experience shows as Sblack is a really efficient app. The app is not based on Electron so saves a lot on file size and resource usage. It is just 20 MB in size, compared to 180 MB for the official app.
Of course, that is not the main reason to use Sblack. Here is what the dark mode looks like in Sblack:
The app looks great with macOS Mojave’s dark mode.

The app supports almost all of Slack’s main features like messages, channels, app integrations, multiple workspaces, keyboard shortcuts, in-line URL previews and GIF playback. There are also some additional customization options available in the app like various font sizes, spell checker, a menu bar icon and more. The app also lets you switch the theme between dark and light modes manually. It doesn’t switch automatically based on your global theme in macOS Mojave’s settings.
In case you are concerned, that app uses Slack’s own login so security is not an issue.
