You will receive this error when you have your Mac set up to use theIU Apple Update Service, but are not connected to the IU network. Forthose on campus, IU Apple Update Service will provide quicker updatesthan Apple's own servers; however, it is not available outside the IUnetwork. For more about the service, see ARCHIVED: What is the IU Apple Update Service, and how do I configure myMac to use it?

To resolve this problem, you have two options:

Responding
  • Establish a VPN connection to the IU network. This option may be better if you mainly use your computer on campus. This will establish a connection to IU and allow you to use the AppleUpdate Service for as long as it is active. For information aboutestablishing a VPN connection, see Connect to IU's SSL VPN using Pulse Secure for Windows or macOS.
  • Reset your update server settings so they use Apple'supdate service instead of IU's. This option may be better ifyou mainly use your computer off campus. If you have Mac OS X 10.8 orlater, you may have added this setting as a configuration profile.Likely the profile will be called 'IU Apple Update Service'; forinstructions on how to remove it, see Remove a configuration profile in iOS or macOS If you havean older version of the OS or there is no profile, from theFinder, click the Go menu, and selectUtilities. In the Utilities folder, open theTerminal program. At the terminal prompt, enter thefollowing:

After you've entered your administrator password, yourcomputer's update settings will permanently revert to their defaults.
